ashley & i are trying to read a couple of pages everyday out of a growth oriented book outside of our Bible study
not because we do not think that the Bible is sufficient
nor to take place of our reading of the Bible
instead, it is to replace 30 minutes of otherwise stale time (ie watching worthless tv, surfing the internet, etc) & to enhance our conversations…& life
we are now two chapters deep in “battling unbelief” by john piper, and came across something i really wanted to share…
at the end of the chapter “battling anxiety,” piper gives 10 specific promises (quoted straight from Scripture) too 10 specific anxieties
there are hundreds of promises countering hundreds of anxieties in the Word, and i think this sort of is the point that piper was getting at by presenting these select 10
when i am anxious…
- about some risky new venture or meeting – Isaiah 41:10
- about my ministry being useless and empty – Isaiah 55:11
- about being too weak to do my work – 2 Corinthians 12:9
- about decisions i have to make about the future – Psalm 32:8
- about facing opponents – Romans 8:31
- about the welfare of those i love – Matthew 7:11 & Mark 10:29-30
- about being sick – Psalm 34:19 & Romans 5:3-5
- about getting old – Isaiah 46:4
- about dying – Romans 14:7-9
- that i may make shipwreck of my faith and fall away from God – Philippians 1:6 & Hebrews 7:25
what are some others?
