humility.8

a fourth way in which we can

destroy pride

and

cultivate humility

in the morning (and throughout our day)

is by

  • Seizing our commute time to memorize and meditate on Scripture.

not everybody has a long commute,

but everybody has

mundane moments

throughout the day.

in every mundane moment,

speak Truth to yourself instead of listening to the Snake.

here’s a cool story from c.j. mahaney:

In the nineteenth century, the evangelical statesman William Wilberforce was largely responsible for the end of England’s participation in the slave trade. John Piper has written and spoken much about this hero of the faith, and he tells how Wilberforce used his on-mile walk to and from Parliament, where he served in the House of Commons, to memorize and meditate on Psalm 119. Wilberforce could recite the entire psalm in the course of the one-mile walk. He seized that time to speak truth to himself, not listen to himself…

You can either get into mental ruts during this time, or seize your commute time as a means of grace to allow Scripture to transform your thinking (see wednesday’s post).

application #5: memorize & meditate on Scripture during the mundane moments of your day.

what do you do during your mundane moments?

“There are many reasons to think that what God has in view, in an increasing communication of himself through eternity, is an increasing knowledge of God, love to him, and joy in him. And it is to be considered, that the more those divine communications increase in the creature, the more it becomes one with God: for so much the more is it united to God in love, the heart is drawn nearer and nearer to God, and the union with him becomes more firm and close: and, at the same time, the creature becomes more and more conformed to God.”

-Jonathan Edwards, “The End for Which God Created the World”

have you experienced increased moments of transformation tied to a pursuit of God?

humility.7

a third way

we can utilize our morning

to cultivate humility

and

annihilate pride

is to

  • Practice the spiritual disciplines.

spiritual disciplines:

  • prayer.
  • Scripture study.
  • worship.

this will destroy your sense of self-sufficiency…

that is the natural bent of us all.

we must battle this,

and start our day with the right orientation.

c.j. mahaney said,

I’ve learned that regardless of how I feel when I’m finished reading my Bible in the morning, I can know that I’ve made the statement, ‘I need You, I’m dependent upon You.’

nobody promises a jolt of happy juice

that plants a permanent smile

and go get ‘em attitude every time you read Scripture.

in fact,

there are many times when God might ordain the exact opposite-an absence of His presence

to encourage your trust in Him in all times,

not just the feel good times…

for His glory

and

your good.

application #4: practice spiritual disciplines.

how do you normally start your day?

*study on humility based on c.j. mahaney’s book “Humility: True Greatness”

Are YOU held captive by your wandering concerns of the day?

Attack these thoughts.

You have this power.

The power of Christ in us can destroy all anxieties.

Examine your thoughts for a few moments this morning before you go about your day.

If you have anxiety or doubt or fear running through your mind, you are sinning.

You are not doing your job.

God commands us to bring every thought captive.

We have no excuse to not do this.

My mind wanders and gets tired the moment i try to focus on something.

So i keep trying.

I keep seeking the dark and evil doubts lingering in my mind so that i may take them captive and live in obedience to Christ.

Don’t have the same doubts you did yesterday, renew your mind.

I pray for your mind today.
