c.j. mahaney continues in his task of providing a framework
to wreck pride and fertilize humility
with five applications under the theme of “special focus.”
the first of these five applications is to
God has so many intriguingly beautiful attributes,
but mahaney specifically recommends studying His
incommunicable attributes.
these include:
r.c. sproul said,
The grand difference between a human being and a supreme being is precisely this: Apart from God, I cannot exist. Apart from me, God does exist.
and,
We are like flowers that bloom and then wither and then fade. This is how we differ from God. God does not wither, God does not fade, God is not fragile.
Matthew Henry said,
The greatest and best man in the world must say, By the grace of God I am what I am, but God says absolutely…I am that I am.
the New Bible Dictionary states,
When we say that God is infinite in spirit, we pass completely out of the reach of our experience.
Jonathan Edwards said,
The saints in glory are so much employed in praise, because they are perfect in humility, and have so great a sense of the infinite distance between them and God.
C.J. Mahaney points out,
Ironically, this distance from God will be even more real to us when we get “closer” to God in heaven.
there is a negative correlation between your understanding of God and your thinking you are like God.
let’s pursue a deeper understanding of Him through
application #9: study of His attributes (the incommunicable ones, especially).
what are some other attributes of God that you have a difficult time putting into words?
