boasting

i imagine that you had some sort of negative reaction to the title of this post: “boasting”

but there is a form of boasting that is beautiful, God-honoring, and connected to the purpose of our existence.

in one of paul’s letters to the church at Corinth, he writes,

…I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting. (1 Cor 9:15)

he would rather die than stay alive and not be able to boast?

in the bigger context, paul is referring to material support from some of the brothers.

he is saying i would rather receive nothing from any of you if it’s going to affect my effectiveness in gospel proclamation; i am freely bound to sharing the hope of glory, and i would rather die than have that taken away from me.

today – boast.

in the next verse, paul clarifies,

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting… (1 Cor 9:16)

do you have a problem with pride and boasting?

i know a solution: boast more.

boast in Jesus and necessarily, you cannot boast of yourself.

would you rather die than have the opportunity taken away from sharing the hope of Jesus with a broken world?

“In the final analysis, worldliness is essentially a self-indulgent attitude.  It may take many forms but, more than the exterior series of behavioral patterns, it is an internal attitude.  The most common and the most subtle form of worldliness among Christians is probably pride.  Some of the most worldly people are safely masqueraded behind their diligent abstinence from doing all the things we usually call “worldly.”  But they are worldly because their basic concern is themselves, their own comfort, their own prestige, their own material prosperity.  Merely abstaining from certain things is no guarantee that we are spiritual.”

-Paul E. Little, “How to Give Away Your Faith” (167)

how do you define worldliness? how do you define holiness?

“It is the truth that frees (John 8:32).  There are sensations of unbounded independence that are not true freedom because they deny truth and are destined for calamity.

For example, two women may jump from an airplane and experience the thrilling freedom of free-falling.  But there is a difference: one is encumbered by a parachute on her back and the other is free from this burden.

Which person is most free?

The one without the parachute feels free – even freer since she does not feel the constraints of the parachute straps.  But she is not truly free.  She is in bondage to the force of gravity and to the deception that all is well because she feels unencumbered.

This false sense of freedom is in fact bondage to calamity which is sure to happen after a fleeting moment of pleasure.”

-John Piper, “what’s the difference?” (52-53)

are you living in true freedom or bondage masked as “freedom”?

“(People) judge (freedom) on the basis of immediate sensations of unrestrained license or independence.  But true freedom takes God’s reality and God’s purpose for creation into account and seeks to fit smoothly into God’s good design.

The greatest freedom is found in being so changed by God’s Spirit that you can do what you love to do and know that it conforms to the design of God and leads to life and glory.”

-John Piper, “what’s the difference?” (53)

how does this definition of freedom conflict or mesh with your idea of freedom?
